James Martin

Independent Choreographer
James Martin is currently an Associate Arts Professor of New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts Dance Department where he has been a full-time faculty member since 1990. He has danced with Gus Solomons jr, Bill T. Jones/Arnie Zane and Company, Donald Byrd/The Group, Jamie Cunningham and Tina Croll, Heidi Latsky, The New York Baroque Dance Company, Connecticut Ballet Company, and Martha Bowers Dance Theater Etc. among others. Mr. Martin has taught at many schools and festivals worldwide including the Mark Morris Monnaie Dance Group in Brussels, the Ballet Academy of Stockholm, the Dansen Hus in Copenhagen, the Université du Québec à Montréal, the Bat Dor School in Tel Aviv, the National Institute of the Arts in Taiwan, the American Dance Festival, the White Mountain Dance Festival, Wesleyan University, and Tulane University. His choreography has been produced in New York City by P.S. 122 (New Stuff), Ballet Builders/New Choreographers on Point, St. Mark’s Danspace Project (Food for Thought), 92nd Street Y, and The Soho Arts Festival at Dia Center for the Arts. His work has also been commissioned by The Connecticut Ballet Company, NYU Tisch School of the Arts, Wesleyan University, Bat Dor Summer Workshop, White Mountain Dance Festival, the Atlantic Dance Theater, Tulane University, The New Dance Collective and Princeton University. Mr. Martin is commissioned to create a new work for the Pittsburgh-based company Bodiograghy for their 2008 season.
Recently, Mr. Martin choreographed the Reger String Trio for Cello Point performances at the Manhattan and Movement Arts Center in March. The trio of musicians for this concert included: Ida Kavafian, Steve Tenenbom, and Peter Wiley of the famed Guaneri String Quartet.
Mr. Martin Also performed with Claire Porter (2013 Guggenheim fellowship recipient) April 22nd at the DO40 song and dance concert at the Ailey Citigroup Theater to benefit Broadway Cares, Equity Fights Aids and Dance for Parkinson’s Disease. He also performed with Ms. Porter at Westfest in the Westbeth Theater. Mr. Martin was a guest artist and teacher at the White Mountain Dance Festival at Sarah Lawerence College in July 2013. Mr. Martin is commissioned to choreograph a work for the 2014 performance of “Cello Point” in the spring of 2014.
